EPA Wins NAAQS Ruling, Likely to Have Major Effect on Power Generation

SUGAR LAND--July 27, 2012--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) won a court fight concerning the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) on sulfur dioxide (S02). On June 2, 2010, the EPA strengthened NAAQS for SO2 by establishing a new 1-hour standard that was designed to protect sensitive individuals from high, short-term (five minutes to 24 hours) exposure. The level was set at 75 parts per billion (ppb) (calculated as the three-year average of the 99th percentile of the annual distribution of daily maximum 1-hour average concentrations, which would revoke the EPA's standard). The EPA would also revoke the two previous primary SO2 standards of 140 ppb (24-hour standard), and 30 ppb (annual standard), which have already been in place since the early 1980's.
